January 17, 1995: The Kobe earthquake and early Antiseismic Architecture

In the morning of January 17, 1995 a strong earthquake hit the Japanese city of Kobe and despite the modern city infrastructure was assumed earthquake-proof more than 6.000 people were killed, 26.800 injured, 46.000 buildings destroyed or damaged and more than 300.000 people were made homeless.

The Kobe earthquake lasted for 14 to 20 seconds and reached a magnitude of 7.2 after Richter (7 according to the Japanese intensity scale ? shindo, the maximal possible value), the strongest earthquake in western Japan since 1923. The devastating earthquake was not directly connected to the nearby subduction zone of the Philippine Sea Plate, but generated along a local fault system formed by the intersection of the Nojima fault with the Suma fault (see also KOKETSU et al. 1998). The epicentre was located in the Akashi strait only 20 kilometres to the west of Kobe, the hypocenter was situated in a depth of just 10 kilometres. Such a shallow earthquake was not expected to occur in Kobe and the vicinity to the city amplified the disastrous effects of the shakes.

The earthquake damaged seriously the traditional buildings of the residential areas in the western and eastern part of the city; people were surprised asleep in their homes and killed or injured by the collapsing houses. The expressway of Hanshin, opened in 1962, was build according to the earthquake-resistant construction directives of the time; however it collapsed partially during the earthquake as the horizontal shear movements pulverized the concrete of the supporting pillars.
The harbour of Kobe, one of the most important in the world and situated on an artificial island, was severely damaged. The vibrations of the earthquake liquefied the soil and groundwater was pressed out from the pores, fissures opened in the ground and mud inundated parts of the harbour. The basement of many buildings became instable in this water-sand mixture and parts of the harbour slipped into the sea.

Based on the observations of the collapse of the Hanshin expressway and the devastation of the harbour the Japanese government improved the already severe guidelines for anti-seismic buildings.
A sort of anti-seismic construction method was already known in ancient Japan as many old pagodas show characteristics that can minimize the dangerous oscillations of a building caused by an earthquake. In a pagoda the central column, supporting the weight of the entire building, is made of a single log. Like a shaft of bamboo (the largest species can reach a height of 30m) this central column can swing in all directions and adsorbs most of the kinetic energy during an earthquake.
The various floors of the pagoda can move independently and are connected to the inner central column by a complicated construction made of wood, acting like a spring or shock absorber it will also reduce dangerous horizontal movements.

The first modern principles of anti-seismic buildings were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century in Tokyo. The earthquake-proof ?Imperial Hotel? was commissioned in 1915 and inaugurated in 1923 as a luxury hotel for foreigners in imperial Japan. It was planned by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), who visited Japan for the first time in 1905.

The site for the hotel seemed unfavourable for such a large building, located in the seismic zone of Tokyo on a 2,4m thick organic soil resting on 20m of soft alluvial sediments.
On such an unstable ground engineers normally choose a deep basement, trying to reach stable rocks or ?anchoring? the building in the underground. Surprisingly Wright planned a very shallow basement with just 2-3m depth. He argued that a deep foundation would transfer the oscillations of an earthquake from the ground to the building; however the alluvial mud of the construction site should adsorb the seismic energy and the hotel could float on the sediment like ?a battleship floats on water.?
The hotel had several ulterior features designed to minimize the destructive effects of an earthquake:

- The pool in front of the entrance was not only a decorative element, but provided water to fight fire. This element in fact saved the hotel from the firestorm raging after the 1923 earthquake.
- Supplementary reinforced structures on the outside of the building provided extra support for the floors.
- The walls were not constructed simply with bricks, but with a sort of innovative sandwich technology: reinforced concrete between an extern and intern layer of bricks.
- The walls of the lower floors were thicker and stronger than the walls on the upper floors, with small openings and few windows.
- A light copper roof would not oscillate as strong as a massive roof, reducing the danger of collapse of the entire building.
- Supplementary ?seismic separation joints?, made of ductile lead, were inserted into the walls of the building; during an earthquake the single segments and floors should be able to move independently.
- Pipes were not encased in the concrete, but could swing in cavities hidden in the walls.
- Wright avoided unnecessary decorative elements on the outside of the hotel, which during an earthquake tend to break and can strike dead people.

September 1, 1923 Tokyo was hit by a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 after Richter, 5.000 buildings collapsed and thousands were heavily damaged.
Wright anxiously awaited information on his hotel and two weeks later he received a telegram from the Japanese businessman Baron Kihachiro Okura:

?Hotel stands undamaged as monument to your genius ? Congratulations?

Wright passed this telegram to journalists and helped so to perpetuate a legend that his hotel was completely unaffected by the earthquake, maybe even the only building still standing in Tokyo!
In reality the building was damaged; the central section slumped, several floors bulged and four pieces of stonework fell to the ground ? however the building was still standing.
Ironically the building?s only main flaw was the shallow basement. During the earthquake the basement sunk by 0,6m into the liquefied mud and in the subsequent years continued slowly to sink into the ground. The damage and instability of the entire construction finally resulted in the necessity to demolish the entire hotel in 1968.

However many of the anti-seismic features introduced by Wright are still used today and hopefully many new inventions will minimize the deadly effects of future earthquakes.

HBT: Yankees, Hughes avoid arbitration with 1-year deal

Phil Hughes and the Yankees have agreed to a one-year deal worth $3.2 million, avoiding arbitration.

Hughes had a disappointing 2011, as injuries limited him to just 75 innings and he posted a 5.79 ERA, but he made $2.7 million and would have been in line for a decent-sized raise if the two sides went to a hearing.

His role for this season isn?t entirely clear after the Yankees traded for Michael Pineda and signed Hiroki Kuroda, because one of Hughes, Freddy Garcia, or A.J. Burnett will seemingly have to be the odd man out in the rotation.

Hughes has bullpen experience, spending most of 2009 as a reliever with lots of success, and taking him out of the rotation?at least initially?could also be a way to avoid doubling his workload following back problems and arm fatigue.

GOP candidates fail to get on some primary ballots (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Many of Mitt Romney's presidential challengers are having trouble fulfilling a fundamental requirement of running for public office: getting on the ballot.

Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman have all failed to qualify for the ballot in at least one upcoming GOP primary. In other states, they have failed to file full slates of delegates with state or party officials, raising questions about whether these candidates have the resources to wage effective national campaigns.

And if one of them were able to marshal enough anti-Romney forces to challenge the front-runner, the ballot blunders could limit their ability to win delegates in key states.

The exception: Ron Paul, who appears to have avoided such pitfalls so far.

"This is why you need a real-life, no-kidding-around campaign," said Rich Galen, a GOP strategist and former Gingrich aide who is neutral in the 2012 race. "All these guys who have been crowing that they found a new way to run for president, it's like saying I'm inventing a new airplane, and it has only one wing."

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, won the first two contests, in Iowa and New Hampshire, and he is leading in the polls in South Carolina and Florida, the next two states to have primaries. Romney raised $56 million in 2011 for his campaign, giving him big financial and organizational advantages over his GOP rivals.

Those advantages are on display as many of his competitors miss deadlines or fail to collect enough signatures to meet ballot requirements in upcoming contests.

Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who came within a few votes of winning the Iowa caucuses, failed to get on the ballot in Virginia or the District of Columbia. His campaign also filed incomplete slates of delegates in Illinois and Ohio, which could limit his ability to win delegates in those key states.

Virginia has been a tough ballot to crack for several GOP candidates because the state requires campaigns to collect signatures from at least 10,000 registered voters. Romney and Paul were the only ones who made the ballot for the March 6 primary. Perry sued, and he has since been joined in the lawsuit by Gingrich, Huntsman and Santorum.

Santorum is the only major candidate who will be left off the ballot in the District of Columbia primary April 3, said Paul Craney, executive director of the DC Republican Committee. The party provides two ways to get on the ballot: Pay $10,000, or pay $5,000 and collect signatures from 296 registered Republicans in the heavily Democratic capital city.

"It's not easy, but it can be done, if you are a serious presidential candidate," Craney said. "All the presidential candidates who are serious about winning the nomination will be on the D.C. ballot."

Santorum adviser John Brabender acknowledged that Romney has more money and a larger campaign organization. But, he said, Santorum's campaign has gained resources and momentum since the close finish in Iowa. Romney, he said, has been running for president for the past six years, giving him more time to build his organization.

"It's a different campaign than it was earlier," Brabender said.

Huntsman, the former Utah governor, failed to get on the ballot in Arizona or Illinois.

The requirements to get on the GOP ballot in Arizona are pretty easy ? all you have to do is fill out a two-page form. Twenty-three candidates managed to do it properly, so they will be on the ballot for the state's Feb. 28 primary.

Huntsman, however, was left off the ballot because his filing had a photocopied signature and wasn't notarized, said Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett.

"If you can't get on the ballot around the country, you're a regional candidate, by definition," said Rich Beeson, the Romney campaign's political director. "Barack Obama is going to be on the ballot in all 50 states, and so will we."

Gingrich, the former House speaker, didn't make it on the ballot for primaries in Missouri or Virginia, though he has joined the lawsuit to get on the Virginia ballot and Missouri won't award any delegates based on its Feb. 7 primary. Instead, Missouri Republicans will hold caucuses March 17.

Perry, the Texas governor, made the ballot in Illinois, but he will only be eligible to win one delegate in the state's March 20 primary ? a contest in which 54 delegates will be up for grabs.

It will take 1,144 delegates to win the nomination at the Republican national convention this summer.

Illinois has a unique way of awarding delegates to candidates. The winner of the state's GOP primary doesn't necessarily get any delegates. Instead, Republicans will vote for the actual delegates, who are listed separately on the ballot but are identified by the candidate they support.

Each of the state's 18 congressional districts will elect three delegates, for a total of 54. To appear on the ballot as a delegate, candidates had to collect signatures from at least 600 registered voters in the district where they are running.

Only one Perry delegate filed signatures by the deadline, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. Gingrich, Paul and Romney filed full slates, while only 44 Santorum delegates filed signatures.

The system is designed to keep fly-by-night candidates from crowding the ballot, said Christopher Mooney, a political science professor at the University of Illinois in Springfield.

"It keeps people who don't know what they're doing out of the arena," Mooney said.

Starry Starry Light Isn't All There is in the Night (ContributorNetwork)

Astronomers have the most amazing jobs in the world. They regularly peek out at the universe, digging up more things than the eye can see. Oh sure, our eyes can detect amazing things in what astronomers call "visible" or "optical" light -- what you see when you look at planets, stars and galaxies. But there's more than meets the eye, as we've been finding out this week at the American Astronomical Society meeting. There are hundreds of papers and talks, all reporting on observations made in all the wavelengths of light: gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, radio, infrared, microwave, and, of course, visible light.

For example, there are places in space that glow in infrared light. You really can't see this form of light, but you feel it as warmth on your skin in sunlight. NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, which is mounted into the side of a modified 747 aircraft, recently used infrared detectors to peer into a region of the sky called the Orion Nebula. SOFIA looked at gas and dust being heated by nearby stars embedded in the nebula. That warmed-up interstellar material gives off heat in the form of infrared radiation, which SOFIA's detectors "see." As a result of the study, astronomers learned that the nebula is filled with interstellar dust made up of silicon, carbon and other metals, and a mix of ice and organic molecules. This stuff is the seed material for stars and planets in the nebula.

Another image presented at this week's meeting, taken using the Hubble Space Telescope, shows the nearby Andromeda Galaxy. It was taken in visible and ultraviolet wavelengths of light and is centered on a 100-million-solar-mass black hole at the hub of Andromeda. Hubble focused on a tightly packed cluster of hot, young blue stars that probably formed near the black hole, which now raises questions about how they survive in such a dangerous environment.

There's other "stuff" out there in the universe that we can't see with any kind of telescope. Its gravitational pull is so strong that it can cause a beam of light to swerve from its path. Every galaxy has so much of this mysterious matter stuffed into it that its motions are affected. But this material remains hidden, invisible ... and dark. That's why it's called "dark matter." It fascinates astronomers so much that it is taking center stage in advanced astronomy observations.

Sukanya Chakrabarti, is an assistant professor of physics for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University, and she specializes in searching out this dark matter. "Most of the mass in the universe is dark," she said during a presentation where a group of astronomers were showing off their latest observations of the effects of dark matter in the cosmos. Knowing where that dark matter is, and how much there is presents astronomers with a big challenge.

People who search for dark matter have known for a long time that galaxies have dark matter throughout them. Chakrabarti looks at specific parts of galaxies called "gas disks" to see how they are affected by this unseen substance. And she has found ripples in those disks. What caused the ripples? She suspects the dark matter haloes of nearby galaxies could be distorting those gas disks. It's similar to what happens when you throw a rock into a pond and ripples flow out across the surface of the water. The amount of rippling Chakrabarti sees in the disks can be used to figure out how much dark matter there is in the area. "The idea is that the ripples in outer gas disks are like a gravitational mirror that let us to see how the dark matter is distributed," said Chakrabarti.

Dark matter studies are becoming more and more important in studies of the early universe, where it played a role in shaping the matter we can see -- particularly the galaxies. It may be dark, but it's an integral part of the universe.

China offers $119 million in aid to Nepal (AP)

KATMANDU, Nepal ? China on Saturday agreed to provide Nepal with $119 million in aid during a surprise visit to the tiny Himalayan nation by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Tirtha Wagle, the Nepalese foreign ministry spokesman, said the countries signed agreements under which Beijing will provide economic and technical assistance and strengthen Nepal's police. Nepal is home to thousands of Tibetan exiles, and the government has worked to suppress anti-China sentiment there.

Wen had planned to visit Nepal last month, but that trip was canceled for undisclosed reasons. This visit came ahead of a Middle East trip by the premier, and was kept secret until a few hours before he arrived.

China has built highways and financed other development projects in Nepal, which is looking for increased financial assistance and investment as it recovers from years of insurgency and political uncertainty.

Nepal is looking for China's help in developing a small airport at Pokhara, a tourist resort, into an international airport, and in building mountain highways and a hydropower plant.

China's major concern in Nepal has been its thousands of Tibetan refugees, who want independence from China and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. Thousands more Tibetans pass through Nepal every year on their way to India, where the Dalai Lama lives in exile.

Nepal's government has previously blocked Tibetan exiles from demonstrating against China, and police have detained some protesters. With security tight in the Nepalese capital on Saturday, there were no reports of protests.

Wen held talks Saturday with Nepal's prime minister and met with Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav, Sushil Koirala of the Nepali Congress and Pushpa Kamal Dahal of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
