Russia warns West over Syria after Obama threats

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Russia warned the West on Tuesday against unilateral action on Syria, a day after U.S. President Barack Obama threatened "enormous consequences" if his Syrian counterpart used chemical or biological arms or even moved them in a menacing way.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking after meeting China's top diplomat, said Moscow and Beijing were committed to "the need to strictly adhere to the norms of international law...and not to allow their violation".

Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil, also speaking in Moscow, dismissed Obama's threat as media fodder.

"Direct military intervention in Syria is impossible because whoever thinks about it ... is heading towards a confrontation wider than Syria's borders," he told a news conference.

Jamil said the West was seeking an excuse to intervene, likening the focus on Syria's chemical weapons with the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq by U.S.-led forces on what proved to be groundless suspicions that Saddam Hussein was concealing weapons of mass destruction.

Russia and China have opposed military intervention in Syria throughout a 17-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. They have vetoed three U.N. Security Council resolutions backed by Western and Arab states that would have put more pressure on Damascus to end violence that has cost 18,000 lives.

In one of the latest battle zones, Syrian troops and tanks overran the Damascus suburbs of Mouadamiya on Tuesday, killing at least 20 young men and burning shops and houses before pulling back, residents and opposition activists said.

The bodies of the men, mostly shot at point-blank range, were found in basements and looted premises, bringing to 50 the death toll from the army's two-day-old offensive to drive rebels from the Sunni Muslim suburb in the southwest of the capital.

"People are just starting to get out of their homes to see the destruction," said one activist who gave her name as Hayat.

Opposition sources said Free Syrian Army rebels left Mouadamiya at dawn under heavy aerial and ground bombardment.

State-imposed curbs on media made it impossible to verify the reports of the violence, which followed another bloody day on Monday, when about 200 people were killed across the country, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"RED LINE"

The United States and its allies have shown little appetite for intervention to halt the bloodshed on the lines of last year's NATO campaign that helped topple Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

But Obama used some of his strongest language yet on Monday to warn Assad not to use unconventional weapons.

"We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is (if) we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized," he said. "That would change my calculus."

Syria last month acknowledged for the first time that it had chemical or biological weapons and said it could use them if foreign countries attacked it.

"We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people," Obama said, perhaps referring to Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah group, an Iranian-backed ally of Assad, or to Islamist militants.

The U.S.-based Global Security website says there are four suspected chemical weapons sites in Syria producing the nerve agents VX, sarin and tabun. It does not cite its sources.

Israel, still formally at war with Syria, has also debated whether to attack the unconventional arms sites which it views as its gravest peril from the conflict next door.

Obama has been reluctant to embroil the United States in another war in the Middle East and refuses to arm Syrian rebels, partly for fear that some of those fighting the Iranian-backed president are Islamist radicals equally hostile to the West.

Rebels have seized swathes of territory in northern Syria near Turkey, which now hosts 70,000 Syrian refugees and which has suggested that the United Nations might need to create a "safe zone" in Syria if that total topped 10,000.

But setting up a safe haven would require imposing a no-fly zone, an idea which U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last week was not a "front-burner" issue for Washington.

With diplomatic efforts to end the war stymied by divisions between world powers and regional rivalries, Syria faces the prospect of a prolonged conflict that increasingly sets a mainly Sunni Muslim opposition against Assad's Alawite minority.

That sectarian faultline also flared in neighboring Lebanon, where two people were killed and more than 60 wounded in the northern port city of Tripoli, a mainly Sunni city with a staunchly pro-Assad Alawite minority.

Gunmen in the Sunni district of Bab al-Tabbaneh and their Alawite rivals in Jebel Mohsen exchanged gun and grenade fire in sporadic fighting overnight and into the day, despite action by Lebanese army troops deployed in the port city, residents said.

The wounded included 10 soldiers, the army said.

General Babacar Gaye, head of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), gives a news conference in Damascus, Syria, Saturday, Aug. 2012. A United Nations spokesperson said on Saturday the last UN observers still in Syria had started to leave the country as their mission officially ends at midnight on Sunday. The observers' departure comes after the Security Council agreed to end the UN mission and back a small new liaison office that will support any future peace efforts. (AP Photo/Salman Muzaffar)

(AP) ? Syria's state-run TV aired footage of President Bashar Assad performing Eid prayers in a mosque in Damascus on Sunday, his first appearance in public after a bombing in the Syrian capital last month that killed the country's defense minister and three other top security officials.

Assad was shown praying at the city's Rihab al-Hamad Mosque to mark the start of Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday that follows the holy month of Ramadan. The last time Assad appeared in public was on July 4 when he gave a speech in parliament.

Since then, there has been a sharp escalation in the country's civil war with almost daily fighting in some districts of the capital between security forces and rebels seeking to topple Assad.

The Syrian regime has suffered a series of setbacks over the past month that point to a loosening of its grip on the country.

The July 18 rebel bombing of the state-security headquarters in the capital was a major blow to Assad. His brother-in-law was among the five killed offcials.

There has also been a steady stream of high-level defections by government officials, diplomats and generals, though Assad's inner circle and military have largely kept their cohesive stance behind him. And the regime has been unable to fully subdue rebel challenges in the two major cities, Damascus and Aleppo.

Assad's appearance comes amid much speculation on the whereabouts of Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa, who was said by some members of the Free Syrian Army to have defected to the opposition. On Saturday, his office denied the reports and said al-Sharaa "did not think, at any moment, of leaving the country."

Al-Sharaa did not appear in the footage at the mosque with Assad.

Paul Ryan brings along mom while talking Medicare in Florida

Paul Ryan brought a secret weapon with him Saturday as he defended his lightning-rod Medicare plan at the nation?s largest senior citizens community - his mother.

Ryan made his case in the crucial battleground of Florida, where many pundits feel his addition to the Republican ticket may hurt Mitt Romney?s chances of carrying the Sunshine State.

But Ryan - cheered on by a Republican-leaning crowd at The Villages - trotted out his mother Betty as the best reason for adopting his plan, which dramatically alters Medicare.

"Medicare was there for our family, for my grandma when we needed it now, and Medicare is there for my mom when she needs it now," Ryan said.

?It?s not just a program, it?s not just a bunch of numbers, it?s what my mom relies on," the Wisconsin congressman said.

The transformation of Medicare is the most controversial component of Ryan?s spending-slashing budget plan.

It would replace the current system with vouchers, which critics believe will drive up the cost of health care - and leave some seniors without the coverage they need.

Realizing they could be vulnerable to Democratic attacks on Medicare, the Republicans have instead tried to strike first on the hot-button issue.

Betty Ryan, who spends winters in Florida, smiled broadly as her son blamed the new federal healthcare law for jeopardizing the future of Medicare.

?Medicare should not be used as a piggybank for Obamacare,? said Ryan, sounding a new GOP talking point that claims the President?s signature legislative accomplishment was in part funded by $716 billion borrowed from Medicare.

The Democrats have pushed back on that accusation, saying that the savings produced by Obamacare will not only repay Medicare but fund it well into the future.

Ryan only heard cheers from the thousands of senior citizens who gathered in the central Florida morning sun to listen to him speak - thanks to a well-chosen location.

The Villages, which is home to more than 60,000 seniors, is owned by Gary Morse, a major Romney donor, and Republican residents outnumber Democrats by more than two-to-one.

Moreover, the private community banned protests at the Ryan event - though a plane did fly overhead carrying a banner that read ?Paul Ryan keep your hands off our Medicare.?

Meanwhile, Romney was slated for a day of fundraising at some of his home state?s toniest locations.

The ex-Massachusetts governor, after raising money in the Hamptons on Friday, was set to buck rake on Martha?s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod.

Romney?s own wealth was expected to draw fire from President Obama, who will also be in New England on Saturday.

Obama, set to appear at a pair of rallies in the swing state of New Hampshire, was ready to slam the Republican ticket?s fiscal proposals.

?The centerpiece of my opponent's entire economic plan is a new $5 trillion tax cut, a lot of it going to the wealthiest Americans,? Obama was to say, according to excerpts released by his campaign.

?And his new running mate, Congressman Ryan,? Obama said, ?put forward a plan that would let Governor Romney pay less than 1% in taxes each year.?

Romney claimed this week that he paid at least 13% in taxes every year. Documents released by Ryan Friday night reveal that he paid taxes at an effective rate of 20% in 2011.

NFL preseason: Panthers 23, Dolphins 17

? Cam Newton outplayed rookie Ryan Tannehill in a matchup of young quarterbacks Friday night as the Carolina Panthers defeated the Miami Dolphins 23-17 in a preseason game.

Newton completed 8 of 11 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers jumped all over the injury-depleted Dolphins defense, scoring on their first three possessions for a 17-0 lead.

Last year?s AP Offensive Rookie of the Year threw a touchdown pass to DeAngelo Williams, and Jonathan Stewart scored on a 2-yard plunge as the Panthers bounced back from a lackluster performance last week against Houston. Newton had been expected to play into the second quarter, but was removed with 1:12 left in the first after a solid night?s work.

The Dolphins defense played without Cameron Wake, Kevin Burnett and Karlos Dansby.

Dish Network's nationwide satellite brodband service could be ready to launch soon

While the various strands of Dish Network's "Seinfeld strategy" have yet to come together officially, Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal are reporting it could be ready launch satellite-based high speed data services nationally as soon as September or October. This would be separate from the service based on ViaSat's Exede that's available in some areas, and Bloomberg's sources say it could accommodate up to 2 million customers right away through a satellite Echostar launched in June, although more satellites may be needed to add more customers. Other than hooking up data connections for customers in rural areas, it would let Dish compete directly with data / TV bundles offered by wired pay-TV providers. Of course, this is all dependent on a favorable ruling by the FCC on its technology -- you can just ask LightSquared what happens if that doesn't work out.

Wildfire arsonist guilty of 5 heart attack deaths

(AP) ? A jury on Wednesday found a California man guilty of murdering five people who had heart attacks after he deliberately started a blaze that ballooned into a massive wildfire.

Jurors in San Bernardino found 30-year-old Rickie Fowler guilty of setting the Old Fire in the foothills above San Bernardino in October 2003 that burned 91,000 acres and torched 1,000 buildings over nine days.

Prosecutors charged Fowler with the murders of five men, ranging in age from 54 to 93, who died from heart attacks after their homes burned to the ground or as they rushed to evacuate. Fowler also was convicted of two counts of arson, along with special circumstances that make him eligible for the death penalty.

That phase of the proceedings is scheduled to begin Monday.

Fowler became a suspect when witnesses reported seeing a passenger in a white van tossing burning objects into dry brush. Investigators acting on a tip interviewed Fowler several months later but didn't have enough evidence to file charges until six years after the fire when Fowler was in jail on a burglary conviction.

The charges against Fowler signaled a tough new standard for arson cases in a region plagued by wildfires that sometimes claim the lives of firefighters and civilians. Prosecutors declined to discuss the reasons for pursuing murder charges except to say the law states that if someone is killed during a felony, a person involved in that crime would be responsible for the death.

Prosecutors said Fowler was angry after a man who had given shelter to his family kicked Fowler out of the home citing thefts and mistreatment. In closing arguments, supervising deputy district attorney Robert Bulloch called Fowler evil and said he knew details about how the fire began that were not revealed to the public.

Defense attorney Donald Jordan argued that prosecutors focused on Fowler to the exclusion of other evidence and pointed out witness discrepancies about the color and model of the van seen where the fire started.

Prosecutors said Fowler gave authorities a note in 2008 acknowledging he was there when the fire began and had intended to light it but a friend beat him to it. The blaze was one of about a dozen that caused widespread damage throughout Southern California during that month.

In 2009, Fowler denied in jailhouse interviews that he tossed a lit road flare from a van to spark the blaze and said he was badgered into making a confession.

The suspected driver of the van, Martin Valdez Jr., was later shot and killed in an unrelated incident.

While in prison awaiting trial, Fowler was convicted of sodomizing a jail inmate and sentenced to three, 25-years-to-life prison terms.

Oil slips to near $93 on rising US crude supplies

Oil prices slipped to near $93 a barrel Wednesday as an unexpected increase in oil supplies in the U.S. more than offset retail sales data showing Americans spending more.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for September delivery was down 32 cents at $93.11 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 70 cents to end at $93.43 in New York on Tuesday.

In London, Brent crude was down 22 cents at $113.81 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange. The contract has gained close to $8 this month.

The declines came despite government figures showing Americans increased their retail spending in July by the most in five months. A gain of 0.8 percent over June was four times greater than expectations and followed three straight monthly declines.

Traders were remaining cautious, however, after the American Petroleum Institute said crude stockpiles in the U.S. rose some 2.8 million barrels last week. Expectations were for a drop of 1.7 million, according to Natalie Rampono, a commodities analyst at ANZ Banking Group in Melbourne.

"It is a negative signal for demand," she said.

The stockpile report from the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration ? the market benchmark ? will be out later Wednesday.

Oil prices were also under pressure from a stronger dollar, which makes crude more expensive and a less appealing investment for traders using other currencies. The euro was down to $1.2279 on Wednesday from $1.2320 on Tuesday.

In other futures trading on the Nymex, gasoline fell marginally to $3.01 a gallon. Heating oil fell 0.5 cents to $3.029 a gallon. Natural gas fell 1.8 cents to $2.82 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Assad's feared brother lost leg in bomb attack: sources

BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's feared brother Maher lost a leg in a bomb attack on the Syrian leader's security cabinet a month ago, sources said on Thursday, in a severe blow to one of the main military commanders fighting a 17-month-old insurgency.

The attack on a meeting of Assad's security chiefs in Damascus on July 18 killed four members of the president's inner circle, including his brother-in-law, and emboldened the rebels to take their fight to the capital for the first time.

Maher has not been seen in public since the bombing, while Assad himself has restricted appearances to recorded clips broadcast on television, leading to speculation about the effectiveness of the leadership as the rebellion grows.

Maher, a close associate of the president, has acquired a fearsome reputation as the commander of the Syrian army's Republican Guard and 4th Division, elite formations largely composed of troops from the Assads' minority Alawite sect, whose loyalty can be relied on in the fight against the rebels.

"We heard that he (Maher al-Assad) lost one of his legs during the explosion, but don't know any more," a Western diplomat told Reuters.

A Gulf source confirmed the report: "He lost one of his legs. The news is true."

The disclosure of Maher's injury came as fears grew that the conflict that has already claimed the lives of at least 18,000 people in Syria was starting to spill over its borders into a region already torn by sectarian divisions.

Gulf Arab states told their citizens to leave Lebanon after a Lebanese Shi'ite clan kidnapped more than 20 people in Beirut and initially threatened to seize more Arab nationals.

The gunmen said a Turkish hostage, whose country is a key backer of Syria's mainly Sunni Muslim insurgency, would be the first to die if one of their kinsmen held by Syrian rebels in Damascus were killed.

The powerful Meqdad family is seeking to put pressure on rebels to release clan member Hassan al-Meqdad, who has been held by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) for two days.

An earlier threat by the kidnappers to seize Saudis, Turks and Qataris to secure the release of their kinsman bore ominous echoes of Lebanon's own civil war - and Arab governments lost no time in urging visitors to leave Beirut's popular summer tourist haunts.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain all told their nationals to leave at once. Some nations have already begun flying their citizens home.

"The snowball will grow," warned Hatem al-Meqdad, a senior member of the Meqdad family who said his brother Hassan was detained by the FSA two days ago.

REGIONAL MOVES

Assad, whose Alawite minority is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, has long relied on support from Shi'ite Iran and its Hezbollah allies.

He accuses the Sunni powers of the Gulf and Turkey of promoting the revolt against him, which grew out of Arab Spring demonstrations 18 months ago.

While his opponents, and the Western powers which sympathise with them, insist they want to avoid the kind of sectarian blood-letting seen in Iraq, rebels who mostly come from Syria's disadvantaged Sunni majority have seized Iranians and Lebanese there in recent weeks, saying they may be working for Assad.

The kidnapping by the Meqdad clan on Wednesday will damage a Lebanese economy for which Gulf tourists have played a part in recovery after 15 years of civil war ended in 1990.

Maher al-Meqdad, the clan's spokesman, said they were only targeting the Free Syrian Army and Turks, insisting that Saudis, Qataris and other Gulf nationals were not targets.

"If Hassan (al-Meqdad) is killed, the first hostage we will kill is the Turk," he told Reuters. He later said the clan had "halted military operations", signalling it would stage no further abductions.

The Turkish hostage told a Lebanese television channel he was being treated well. Another station broadcast footage it said showed two Syrian hostages in the custody of masked gunmen from the Meqdad clan wearing fatigues and armed with rifles.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the kidnappings, but his government seemed largely powerless to act.

"This brings us back to the days of the painful war, a page that Lebanese citizens have been trying to turn," he said.

Fighting in Syria has triggered violence across the border before - some of it linked to Syrian rebels bringing arms and supplies across Lebanon.

DEFECTION

But the round of hostage-taking on both sides adds a new factor for regional states, who are advancing their strategic interests while Russia and the West are deadlocked by their deep divisions over Syria.

At a meeting in Saudi Arabia, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation suspended Syria on Thursday, citing Assad's suppression of the Syrian revolt, but there was little support for direct military involvement.

The 57-member body's rebuke is mostly symbolic, but it shows Syria's isolation - as well as that of its ally Iran - across much of the Sunni-majority Islamic world.

Later, Al-Arabiya television reported that a cousin of Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Shara had defected and was calling on members of the Syrian army to join the "revolution".

China used a visit to Beijing by a special envoy from Assad to repeat its call for the Syrian government to talk with the opposition and take steps to meet the people's demand for change, but offered no new solutions.

Talks seem unlikely in the near future while the rebels insist Assad must step down as a precondition for negotiations and government troops are pounding rebel forces.

The price being paid by the Syrian people was underlined by the U.N. humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos, who said that as many of 2.5 million people, about one tenth of the population, were in need of aid.

Speaking in Syria where she met Prime Minister Wael al-Halki this week, Amos said: "Back in March, we estimated that a million people were in need of help. Now as many as 2.5 million are in need of assistance and we are working to update our plans and funding requirements."

Pietersen waits on Twenty20 decision after apology

England batsman Kevin Pietersen will discover by Saturday if his apology for sending "provocative texts" to South African players has come in time to salvage his hopes of playing in the World Twenty20.

Throughout months of escalating tension with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) hierarchy, Pietersen has always expressed the wish to help England defend the trophy they won in the Caribbean two years ago when he was named man of the tournament.

Saturday is the International Cricket Council deadline for teams to name their final squads for this year's edition, in Sri Lanka starting in September.

Pietersen's apology, issued Wednesday, came too late to save his place in the team for the third and final Test against his native South Africa at Lord's starting on Thursday.

Last weekend England dramatically dropped Pietersen from their squad for Lord's, even though he scored a brilliant 149 in the drawn second Test in Leeds.

Pietersen was axed for failing to reveal the contents of those text messages, some of which were said to contain criticisms of England captain Andrew Strauss.

Eventually, Pietersen admitted Wednesday: "I did send what you might call provocative texts to my close friends in the SA team.

"The texts were meant as banter between close friends. I need to rein myself in sometimes. I apologise to Straussy and the team for the inappropriate remarks at the press conference and for the texts.

"I truly didn't mean to cause upset or tension particularly with important games at stake."

Throughout his tenure as captain Strauss, for whom Thursday's match represents his 100th Test and 50th as captain, has tried to keep Pietersen, his predecessor as skipper, on board.

So it was no surprise to hear Strauss say Wednesday he felt "let down" by Pietersen.

"I feel a little bit let down by Kevin, if I'm honest," said Strauss.

"But this isn't an issue between me and Kevin. It's a broader issue than that and it's very important that I act in the best interests of England cricket team.

"It's not a personal thing. I've always got on very well with Kevin, which is why some of the stuff has been quite surprising to me."

Strauss acknowledged Pietersen's apology by saying: "It's a step forward, it's a step in the right direction. But this issue hasn't just been about the text messages.

"There's been a bit more of a broader issue about trust and mutual respect, and that issue I'm very keen to resolve.

"If we're going to resolve those issues we need to do it face to face, away from the media spotlight and away from PR companies and press releases.

"That's not helping any of us at this stage."

Strauss no longer plays Twenty20 cricket and Pietersen will also have to mend some fences with England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad.

The all-rounder said he'd no role in a parody Twitter account for Pietersen.

The account - KP Genius - was set up by a friend of Broad, Richard Bailey, and had been thought to have contributed to the strained relations Pietersen felt within the England dressing room amid suggestions some of his team-mates were involved.

But Broad insisted: "I would like to confirm that I had no involvement in this whatsoever.

"As has been widely reported Mr Bailey is a friend of mine, but we had no conversations regarding this issue at all and I am pleased that he has now decided to close the parody account down."

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM - PDF

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM

In a fiercely competitive online atmosphere, press releases can be a valuable resource for increasing
your company's overall visibility, but only if they're optimized effectively. Remember, this tactic is no
longer just about publicizing your latest news. Instead, it's about creating visibility through multiple
channels that allow you to connect through content, reaching those audience segments that are
relevant to your company and purpose.
When optimized correctly, online press releases can do all of the following:

* Boost Search Engine Rankings for SEO
* Drive Targeted Traffic
* Build Brand Awareness
* Save Money on Pay-Per-Click Campaigns
* Usurp Position From Competition on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)
Despite these numerous benefits, however, many companies continue to use unoptimized press
releases that don't work as well as they could. Instead, these lazy releases stagnate in Deleted
folders and are never indexed by the major search engines. Remember, this isn't a traditional press
release like Grandma used to write.
Unlike traditional press releases, which were succinct and written with readers in mind, online press
releases need to be more carefully crafted. An online press release (like SEO in general), is half art
and half science - in addition to appealing to readers, they need to be optimized for search engines in
order to drive results. A few simple modifications could increase their effectiveness drastically,
providing far more SEO benefit to your online presence than they would have otherwise.
So how do you write and optimize an online press release that will drive tangible results?
First and foremost, employ common sense and reason. No one wants to read something that isn't
newsworthy, and these type of releases won't garner any publicity. In fact, according to a DM News
survey, 98 percent of journalists are online every day, and almost 75 percent are searching for press
releases. So before you write anything, ask yourself if the story you're thinking about publicizing is
newsworthy. As a member of your industry, whatever that may be, would you take the time to read it?
If not, don't waste your time. Wait for a story that will make a splash and matter to your audience.
Next, identify the keywords your press release will utilize. Align them with the keywords and phrases
you're already optimizing in order to derive the highest SEO benefit. In order to make sure you're
choosing those with the most potential, start with some quick competitive analysis. This can be done
by performing a News search that includes your keyword on Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, or any other
popular search engine.
Looking at the results page, you'll know if this is the right keyword or phrase to chase? How? By the
amount of competition it presents. If you notice that most of the results are spread out over a longer
time span, this keyword is a good opportunity because there clearly isn't as much competition. On the
other hand, if your search turns up ten stories from the past few days, you'll know that this term is

much more competitive due to the many stories you're competing against.
Now that you're aware of the competitive landscape, determine the amount of flexibility you have to
work with. As I mentioned before, if you're attempting to enter a space that's crowded with recent
news, you'll need to focus on a single keyword phrase, while if you have more flexibility, you can
chase several permutations of your keywords.
In the end, it's a better idea to focus on specific online niches, crafting your press release in a way
that you know will appeal to your potential readers. Your press release will be much more potent if it
gets noticed within a specific sector than if it languishes away in relative obscurity, hidden somewhere
in a crowd of similar stories.
This simple research phase can make all the difference in whether your press release gets noticed,
but it's often the most overlooked aspect of this strategy. Don't get trapped milling around in the
virtual crowd - stand out and get noticed by optimizing around the keywords that hold the most
potential.
Once you've completed this critical research step, you will have identified the most potent keywords
with which to write your press release. Now you're finally ready to start writing!
Start with the headline, the most important part of your press release. Include your most competitive
keywords in this headline. While it may be tempting to simply combine all of your keywords, it's
imperative that your headline remains both condensed yet descriptive. Think like a journalist and a
searcher here. Stick to the basics, providing the essential facts and the who, what, where, when, and
why. All of the major search engines start by looking for keywords in headlines, so be sure to give
them what they're looking for in order to capitalize on relevancy. Observe these rules and you'll also
attract those all important human readers.
After you've crafted the headline, it's time to start writing the body of your press release. Begin by
isolating several related phrases to maximize your SEO potential. For example, if you're publicizing
the launch of your new SEO site, your headline may be something like Fusionbox Launches SEO
Microsite.
Don't fall victim to the constraints you'll encounter with the use of just one keyword or phrase. Instead,
use a web of related keyphrases to expand your reach. Alternate permutations like "Fusionbox
Launches Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Microsite," for example, will invariably broaden your
scope and influence. These various combinations allow your release to appear in News results for
these related phrases as well.
Try rotating various combinations of keywords in the body of the release as well to create more
diversity and cover more ground. For example:
"Fusionbox, a Denver SEO agency, recently lauched a new microsite devoted to search engine
optimization (SEO) strategies. The company, which specializes in search engine marketing (SEM),
web design, and web development, needed a unique platform to reach clients looking for optimization
solutions and showcase their SEO services."
Rather than using the same keyword phrase repetitively and sounding like a broken record (which
drives human readers away), this sentence sprinkles other keyword combinations that expand the

SEO value of the release without detracting from readability.
Be creative here. Don't try to overload on keywords or your release won't flow like good writing
should. A good rule of thumb is to write with an eye for your keywords, incorporating them into the
release when natural opportunities appear.
Once you've finished writing your release, read over it again and circle your keywords in red. Does it
sound natural or look like a finished New York Times word search? If so, take a step back and ensure
your work flows while maintaining general SEO copywriting best practices and a healthy keyword
density.
Next, look for instances of your keywords where you could include a backlink to your site. This will
allow you to build valuable incoming links to your site, which are a major determinant of search
engine positioning. Remember to use the full URL in your link if you can't employ anchor text, as this
will ensure your link is indexed and available to search engines and readers alike.
1
Finally, you've finished writing your optimized press release. Now you're ready to begin the
submission process. There are an infinite number of press release sites on the Internet, but some are
far superior to others. Before you go about submitting anywhere and everywhere, make sure the sites
you're submitting content to are crawled by the major search engines, or else you won't get any SEO
benefit from your release.
Many of the more popular distribution services are indexed by Google News, Yahoo News, and
others, but make sure by searching for related stories on these engines and noting where the top
results originate. This way, you'll get a better idea of which distribution channels specific search
engines favor.
Target these for your own release to ensure your content will be visible where it matters, especially as
Universal search [http://running-with-the-bulls-seo.blogspot.com/2007/09/blended-search-changes-
internet.html] rolls onto the scene, showing News links among the regular search results.
As you can see, optimizing your press release is a somewhat complex endeavor. Still, considering
that an optimized release is an essential ingredient to a search engine marketing (SEM) campaign for
its ability to boost search engine rankings, drive targeted traffic, build brand awareness, and even
help you gain digital real estate on the SERPs (search engine results page), the juice is definitely
worth the squeeze.
Just observe the best practices I've described above and you'll build your online presence in this
fiercely competitive online atmosphere where visibility is everything. An optimized press release will
allow you to connect with your target audience through content while deriving tangible SEO benefits.

Education Collections: Excellent iPad App Store Featured Section ...

App Store Education Collections

Every Thursday the Featured area of the iPad App Store gets a refresh and adds some new and often topical featured sections. This week one of these is titled ?Education Collections? and it?s one of the best and most complete sections of this type that I?ve seen.

Just in time for the back to school period, this featured section is packed with very good, curated selections of educational apps across a wide range of categories.

Math

The Education Collections section features 24 sub-sections (plus a few more highlighting Apple?s own apps) including reading, math, physics, chemistry, music, writing, geography, astronomy and earth science, foreign languages, test prep and lots more.

Writing

There?s a promising looking Apps for Teachers section ?

Apps for Teachers

A very good looking looking section for Special Education ?

Special Education Apps

iTunes U also gets a sub-section to itself.

Education

I?m not a student or teacher and I couldn?t play either one on TV, but I think this Education Collections featured section looks like a great resource for students, parents of students, and teachers. I would certainly vote for this one to be kept around as a featured section for a few weeks. It is one of the rotating highlighted sections at the top of the iPad App Store Featured area. You can also find it by tapping on the Education banner block just below the New and Noteworthy section in the Featured area.

This entry was posted in iPad App Store and tagged iPad App Store, iPad education apps by Patrick Jordan.
