My Unofficial ?Love Your Instructor? Day. ? Scuba Dive Chat

The scuba community lost a huge friend this week.? Rick, a former co-worker of mine and a fellow scuba instructor passed away earlier this week.? While not famous, and nobody you?d recognize if you didn?t know him already, Rick?s knowledge and kindness touched hundreds, if not thousands of divers

Unofficial Love Your Instructor Day

Unofficial Love Your Instructor Day

everywhere he?d meet them.? Even though he had probably forgotten more about scuba than most dive clubs can collectively claim they know of the sport you?d not have known him to possess the experience and information because he was never?the type of person who needed another person to be impressed by him.?? Anybody who has been involved with scuba for any length of time can attest?to how rare and refreshing a trait that is among divers.

Rick?s knowledge of scuba equipment, how it worked, how to use it safely?and how to service it far exceeded even my own.? And even though, at one point in our careers it was my task to run technician seminars and certifications that he attended, never once did he ever give an air of ?snobbiness? or superiority.? One time in Orlando, Florida at the DEMA show he was there with nothing else to do, as his wife had to be at the show all week.? He offered to be my helper for 3 days of seminars and spent his time drifting about the room?assisting new technicians or offering advice?never once getting bored or complaining, even though in a perfect world it would have been Rick imparting his wisdom and me soaking it in.

Rick was the kind of guy in which you never saw anything but a smile on his

Rick

face.? Whether he was at work dealing with a challenging piece of gear, or at the beach in his drysuit with his steel cylinders all twinned up getting set for a very long dive on a distant off shore reef you?d never see anything but the twinkle in his eye and grin on his face.? Even when his wife passed away a few years ago, and you could sense how badly he was hurting inside, never once would he let you see anything but that smile.? Something I will forever respect about him, knowing a lot about the crummy cards it seems like he was so often dealt throughout his life.

Rick was a guy I?m proud to have known.? I?ll always have fond thoughts of our comparisons of similar places we?d visited and our opinions of some of the old scuba gear we?d seen over the years and how it changed.? And even though he wasn?t MY instructor, per se, I learned as much about scuba from Rick as any scuba instructor I?ve ever had.? Although I didn?t spend as much time around Rick the past few years as I?d have liked, I consider myself very fortunate indeed to have known him.? My only regret now is that I?ll never get the chance to give him my appreciation for all that he did teach me over the course of the past 8-10 years.

So, this brings me to my point.? How many of you out there are still in regular contact with your scuba instructor either as a friend away from scuba or as a dive buddy?? Of those of you who are, how many of you have ever taken that moment to show your appreciation for what they?ve taught you.? I?m not talking your scuba class or course.? You paid them for that and trust me, every instructor appreciates that.?? But more the tips and tricks that make the sport fun.? The kind of thing they themselves figured out over years of practice or, perhaps more likely, had been taugh long before by their own instructor.? If you haven?t, give it some thought.? Before it?s too late.? Because without people like Rick in our sport scuba just isn?t as fun and enjoyable as it should be.

WHAT HAPPENED TO COMMUNICATION AT WORK ...

In today?s business world things do not appear to be going as well as they used to. Do any of you recall when you actually looked forward to going to work? Does anyone out there know what went wrong ? what actually happened? Why has going to work become such drudgery? Do any of you know what changed ? say in the last decade or two?

I believe employees are no longer as happy as they used to be, no longer take as much pride in their work, and as a result, things have gone awry.? Of course there are many reasons for this downturn. But here I am going to address one ? communication at work. There is one thing you can be sure of ? it is management?s responsibility to make whatever changes are required in order to bring personal pride back to their workplace.

As a veteran business improvement consultant and coach? I have witnessed and studied such worker frustration for over twenty-five years now, and I know how seemingly unrewarding workdays have become for people in all industries. Most workers say their jobs are boring, unchallenged, and their efforts are no longer appreciated. People do not seem as happy and caring as they used to about coming to work anymore ? and their executives and managers have not been able to come up with a good fix. That is until now. Read on to learn more about a new ?style of managing? ? one that brings everyone into the process.

This past weekend, one of my newest clients was searching for some good business advice on the internet. He was punching in all kinds of search words to see if he could find a site somewhere that would answer a few of his questions, or at the very least, lead him in a positive direction. He was concentrating on improving communication at his workplace, on new ways to improve morale, profits, atmosphere, et al. After about an hour or so, he came across a site that absolutely astounded him. This site popped up on Google?s first page when he typed in ?improve profits easily?.? There he was able to download? a free report entitled ?Are You Asking The Right Questions ? To The Right People??? After reading it (only six pages), he got in touch with me. He said he had been blown away by the ?simplicity of the logic? in the list of questions. The report made him want to change the way he managed immediately and asked for my help.

This site provides direct and easy to understand logic for any business to improve, and it should be a must visit for anyone who leads people. For every business owner, executive, manager, and supervisor who visits this site, I believe they will look forward to going to work the next day. This site offers an e-book entitled ?Successful Business Awareness??, and an explanation of what ?Panorizontal Communication? in the workplace is all about ? as well as any coaching support that may be needed to assure the promises made become reality. It is supported by many testimonials and claims from former and current clients.

If you are currently a business manager, executive or owner, find out for yourself why communication at work may seem lost ? but now can be found again, with positive and rewarding results.

Plan A Hiking Expedition Through The Grand ... - Travel Centired

A river expedition on the Colorado River as it makes its way through the Grand Canyon is the stuff of legends, and with good reason. The whitewater is some of the most wild and adventurous in the world, and the red rock/blue sky/green trees landscape is second to none. But what about that panorama? Should you be fortunate enough to score a spot on a river expedition, your Grand Canyon river guide may take you on a couple of side hikes, but you typically won?t have enough time to see the best side canyons, oases, and vistas around. An excellent way to experience this desert wonder is by embarking on one of the many hiking expeditions the Grand Canyon has to offer.

On a Grand Canyon hike or backpacking trip, you are likely to see some of the most remarkable geologic, picturesque views on the planet, as well as complex side canyons, gorgeous oasis-like green areas, creeks, and wildlife such as deer, wild sheep, and many birds of prey. You will work for these opportunities, of course, typically logging several miles each day. But for the hale and hardy (it is suggested that you be in pretty fair physical condition for some of these outings), the hike is a once in a lifetime chance to experience the canyon like few others ever will.

Depending on what time of year you book your trip, heat can be a concern. Temperatures in the summers can be well into the triple digits, so if that seems extreme to you, you should look at April-May, when the vegetation is starting to blossom, or late summer/early fall, which can be a truly beautiful time to enjoy the canyon due to the changing colors and cool, crisp nights.

Employing a professional outfitter will help ensure safety and virtually guarantee that you experience the best the canyon has to offer. Depending on the length of your trip, your guides will provide some or all of the necessary equipment so you have less to transport. They will also provide a list of necessary personal items you should bring, such as hats and water sandals so you will be well prepared before you embark on your adventure. If you do decide to do your own trip, be prepared to carry in all of your equipment including food, clothing, shelter, etc. There are pack mules for hire in the area, but it is really an option that is best left to the experienced outdoorsmen.

So, whether you?ve already been to the Colorado River on a whitewater rafting tour, or you?re organizing your first trip to this beautiful area, hiking in the Grand Canyon is the perfect outdoors adventure trip to experience this natural wonder.

93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

All Critics (192) | Top Critics (36) | Fresh (179) | Rotten (13)

Brad Bird passe his audition for a career as a live-action director. And "Ghost Protocol" more than makes its bones as an argument for why Tom Cruise should continue in this role as long as his knees, and his nerves, hold up.

Brad Bird passes his audition for a career as a live-action director. And "Ghost Protocol" more than makes its bones as an argument for why Tom Cruise should continue in this role as long as his knees, and his nerves, hold up.

"Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol" is sheer hurtling mechanism-and it's great silly fun.

As usual with the series, the movie combines a plot line a toddler could understand with gadgets that would baffle an engineering Ph.D.

I'm thinking it, so I might as well say it: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is no Fast Five.

...it's pretty much state-of-the-art.

Brad Bird's Mission made me feel like a kid again.

... a good-size barrel of fun.

still does not have the hang of what made the TV show so good.

Cruises on the WOW! factor.

Snagging Oscar-winning animation director Brad Bird to fill the director's chair proves to be an inspired choice--and, upon thought, a bit of a no-brainer.

The screenplay doesn't rely too much on gimmicks to advance the plot. Instead, the plot is also character-driven to an extent. There are interesting dynamics going on in the Mission Impossible team.

Director Brad Bird juices and gooses the whole affair with edge and excitement, new energy, humor and heartbeat, and a terrific feel for big, bold, audaciously daring sequences that beg for the biggest screen available.

Great stunts and not a dull moment,

Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol could very well be the series' best installment.

It has a few very good ideas, and then, the rest of it is totally lackluster.

Watching Tom leap from a hospital window on to a passing truck, I couldn't help but worry: Tom, those knees won't last forever.

Succeeds in dishing up exactly what you would expect: State of the arts stunts, non-stop action, and a series of clearly laid-out heists and chases that go awry in all kinds of creative ways.

Bird manages the escalations from the preposterous through the more preposterous to the most preposterous with skill and wit...

...great cinematic entertainment.

Better than the tower climb is the scene in which Hunt infiltrates the Kremlin with, essentially, a high-tech magic trick; the playfulness of the effect demonstrates the usefulness of Bird's background in the astonish-the-audience culture of animation.

So exciting you have to remind yourself to breathe.

Ghost pulls off the impossible.
